​Total Empty Containers at the Port of Mombasa record 7079 TEUs

Empty containers at the Port of Mombasa recorded 7,079 Twenty Feet Equivalent Units (TEUs) out of the 19,171 TEUs total yard population in the week ended September 13th 2017.

There were 6,254 TEUs ready for collection by consignees, 3,227 TEUs awaiting pickup order and 1,258 full exports (nominated/un-nominated).  The yard which recorded 21,093 TEUs in the previous week was also holding 528 TEUs for transhipments and another 825 TEUs at the Customs Warehouse.

During the week under review, the Container Terminals received 12 vessels, registering a ship average working time of 2.17 days as the container dwell time recorded 5.55 days. The vessels discharged a total of 10,765 TEUs and loaded for export 11,389 TEUs. Deliveries of containers from the port by road transport registered 12,939 TEUs while the rail transport evacuated 278 TEUs.

Containers received at the Containers Freight Stations (CFS) recorded 820,394 TEUs while another 816,031 TEUs were delivered leaving a balance of 4,363 TEUs. Import population during the week revealed that 4,385 TEUs were locally bound while 5,362 TEUS were to be delivered to various transit destinations. Both local and transit destinations registered a decline by 1,321 TEUs and 274 TEUs respectively.

Uganda, the leading port user in the transit market segment maintained her position accounting for 4,255 TEUs an equivalent of 79.3 percent of the segment. South Sudan claimed the second position with 389 TEUs followed by Tanzania with 285 TEUs, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with 221 TEUs, Rwanda with 160 TEUs while Somalia and Burundi registered 32 TEUs and 12 TEUs respectively.

The Conventional cargo terminal worked 29 general cargo ships, handling a total of 288,505 metric tonnes at an average of 41,215 metric tonnes per day. Motorcar-carriers discharged a total of 1157 Units of motor-cars and 130 trucks.

Bulk maize was the leading import commodity registering 59,499 metric tonnes followed by 42,240 metric tonnes of bagged cement and 37,934 metric tonnes of bulk wheat. Other general cargoes handled in fairly large quantities included 32,410 metric tonnes of bulk coal, 31,050 metric tonnes of bulk sugar, 10,471 metric tonnes of bagged sugar, 5,698 metric tonnes of bulk fertiliser and 28,210 metric tonnes of steel.

Deliveries of general cargo out of the port by road recorded 201,931metric tonnes while the off-take by conveyor belt registered 77,689 metric tonnes.

Meanwhile in the next 14 days, the Conventional cargo terminal is expected to handle 279,620 metric tonnes of imports and another 8,885 metric tonnes of exports. The Container Terminals are expected to discharge 13,167TEUs and load 14,256TEUs.
